Rain Bath

Description

After not attending the Kentucky Derby, I was very, very eager to see and photograph California Chrome.  I was so eager that even though it was torrentially raining (understatement), I still showed up and braved it.  In short, it was miserable.  I discovered that all the "water-resistant" clothing I wore was, well, not.  And my "water-resistant" bag--ditto.  Also, my camera?  It was destroyed.  For the second year in a row, rain at a Triple Crown event did my poor camera in.  About an hour after this photo was taken, it gasped its last breath.  (Don't worry, I was able to borrow another camera for the rest of the weekend...a BETTER camera. ;) )  It has since been repaired, yay!

Despite all that, I have no regrets, because this was my favorite shot of the weekend.  California Chrome doesn't look like he's enjoying the rain much, either, but at least he dried off waaaaay before I probably did.

Am I weird to admit I love how rain exemplifies textures? And props go to your camera for capturing all the little details; raindrops, ripples along Chrome's body...it's a type of texture/detail we can't see without the good ol rain, even if working in the rain can be plain miserable.

Chrome still looks great though, even when soaking wet (me? I'd look like a drowned rat!). Plus, I like seeing this side of Chrome--it's so typical to see shots of him racing, training, and so forth. A photo like this in the torrential rain may not have the glitz and grandeur of a race, but from my perspective, it captures a lesser seen, more natural-looking side of the horse.

Not sure if my comment makes much sense, but in a nutshell, I love this piece. :D
